Matthew Barber, Police and Crime Commissioner said:

My thoughts remain with the families and friends of James Furlong, David Wails and Joseph Ritchie-Bennett who were killed in the horrific terrorist attack in Forbury Gardens, Reading on 20 June 2020.

A verdict of unlawful killing was returned today by Judge Coroner Sir Adrian Fulford in relation to their deaths with conclusions centred on the failings of multiple agencies.

Thames Valley Police will review and consider the findings fully once the formal recommendations have been received. Since the attack, work within the force has led to the identification and implementation of improvements to processes and, as a priority, I and my office will be liaising with the Chief Constable to address any further learning identified.

I thank the brave police officers on the scene that day and all the emergency services and other partners that supported the response.

I cannot underestimate the long-term impact of this horrendous attack and the trauma felt by all those directly affected as well as the wider community in Reading.

Policing will continue to work with partners to share learning to strengthen its response in the protection of our communities.
